Cliff is going into the hospital to
have his appendix removed.

medicine:
Oh yeah,
well no, sure it is Norm. You know I'm in the hands of skilled
professionals. It's not like the old days is it? You know,
where they give you a shot of Whiskey, lick the scalpel and go
a carving.
The truth:
During the American Civil War, it
was very common for a soldier to have his leg amputated. Four
men would hold the patient down and he e would be given a rag to
bite down on, sometimes a bullet (hence the term "bite the
bullet"). If he was very lucky,
he would be given some Whiskey handy to help numb the pain.
