Extra Fat...

Season 7 Episode 12: Please Mr. Postman
Airdate:
February 02 1989
Cliff trains Margaret to be a mail carrier and they fall in love but Margaret loses her job a decides to move to Canada.

She convinces Cliff to go with her and as he's leaving Cheers the gang starts to sing Ballad of the Green Beret.

Cliff says to Margaret "Margaret , you're a fine woman but I can't leave my country. My place is here, in America. I can't leave my home, can't you stay with me?"

Margaret  replies "I'm a mail carrier Cliff, I have to deliver the mail.

Cliff: "I understand."

Margaret: "But Cliff, it'll be so terrible, I'll be so cold and all alone. Who'll keep me warm?"

This long introduction leads to this short bit of trivia:

You'll do fine Margaret, women have that extra layer of fat.

The truth:

Actually women do not have an extra layer of fat to keep them warmer.

Just below the skin is a layer of fat called the subcutaneous fat and it women it is thicker than in men, but as a result the surface skin temperature is lower in women and thus they actually feel colder than men.

On the plus side, if you're a woman, you can survive where male counterparts might perish because of that slightly thicker fat layer if you ever encounter life threatening cold.

Cliff Recommends: Personal Finance

The words to Ballad of the Green Beret:

Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Trained to live off nature's land
Trained in combat, hand-to-hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage peak from the Green Berets

Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request

Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret.
