Traveling At The Speed Of light...

Season 5 Episode 15: Spellbound
Airdate:
January 22 1987
Norm and Cliff are sitting at the bar.

Cliff has an Einstein moment with this little gem.

You know, if I took a ride in a spaceship at the speed of light for 10 years, when I returned I'd be 10 years older but everybody else here would be 80 years older. Now, do you realize the ramifications of that?
(Norm: "Yeah, for once you'd be the best player on our softball team.")

The truth:

According to the Lorentz Transformation relative time can be measured for objects or people in motion compared to those at rest.

To make Cliff's statement true and have everyone age by 80 years while he only ages 10 years, he'd have to travel at 0.99498743710662 C (C = the speed of light). If he were to travel at the speed of light then the time that passes at Cheers would be infinite.

Cliff Recommends: Travel Asia

Some light calculations :

  • At 1 C time passage is infinite.
  • At .99999 C time passes 223 times as quick.
  • At .9999 C time passes 70.71 times as quick.
  • At .999 C time passes 22.36 times as quick.
  • At .99 C time passes 7.09 times as quick.
  • At .9 C time passes 2.29 times as quick.
  • At .8 C time passes 1.67 times as quick.
  • At .5 C time passes 1.15 times as quick.
  • At .1 C time passes 1.005 times as quick.
