Norm and Cliff come from the back room
and Cliff is explaining the origins of billiards. |
Oh yeah, and
after all the game of billiards was invented by the ancient
Venetians, Norm, and it gained popularity after a group of
Benedictine Monks invented felt.
The truth:
The origins of billiards date back to Northern Europe in the
15th century, most likely France, where it started out as an
outdoor game but soon was moved indoors and played on a table,
due to bad weather.
There is, however, some documented evidence of games similar to
both billiards and croquet as far back as 4th Century B.C. in
Greece.
The cue was not invented until the 17th century.
As far as felt goes, the origin of it is long lost, but it
pre-dates billiards by thousands of years.
