When The British Ruled The Punjab...

Season 1 Episode 9: Coach Returns to Action
Airdate:
November 25 1982
It's been many weeks since we last heard Cliff's wisdom, but Diane finally ask Norm how someone can drink ice cold beer in freezing weather. Norm asks Cliff for an explanation.

When the British ruled the Punjab.....they drank steaming hot pots of tea on the hottest days of the year to balance out their inside and outside temperatures. See, conversely drinking an ice cold drink on a cold day actually results in a more comfortable body temperature.

Diane then asks " Why do you drink ice cold beer on a hot day?" and Cliff comes back with "What else are you going to do with it?"

The truth:

There seems to be some disagreement on Cliff's claim, but if he said it, it must be wrong. Drinking a cold drink on a cold day or a hot drink on a hot day seems to have negligible, if any effect on your body.

The theory behind the hot drink is that it will cause you to sweat and sweating reduces body temperature, but if you are hot already, you should be sweating as well.

A secondary theory is that you raise you body temperature to balance with the outside temperature, thus feeling cooler.

This may explain why there are no Starbucks in Death Valley, you wouldn't want to be balancing out at 120 F.

A cool fact:

  • Chinese emperors had buckets of snow carried down from the mountains to cool their tea on hot days.
